JDHS boys take second at state
The Crimson Bears boys’ cross country team’s strong performance with three top-15 runners earned it a second-place finish at Saturday’s ASAA/First National Bank State Cross Country Championships on the Michael Janecek Running Trails at Palmer High School.

A harbor seal surfaces in the waters at the lower level of the DIPAC fish ladder on Thursday. Numerous seals have been seen at the location chasing the last returning salmon. Coincidentally there have been an increase of killer whale moving into Juneau waters.

Juneau honors fallen firefighters
To mark the start of National Fire Prevention Week, Juneau’s Fallen Fighters Memorial on Saturday honored 103 U.S. firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2008.

Man, 25, reportedly shoots himself
A 25-year-old man was medevaced to Seattle with life-threatening injuries after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a .22-caliber rifle in Lemon Creek on Friday afternoon, the Juneau Police Department reported.
