Slush Cup supplies splashy ending
For the first time in Slush Cup history, Ken Leghorn attempted to skim across the traditional 130-foot-long, four-foot-deep pond on nothing more than a pair of “skinny skis” Saturday at Eaglecrest Ski Area. His run kicked off the 2009 Slush Cup, which marked the end of the ski season and drew just under 60 competitors in the less-than-spring-like weather.

ADF&G warns that bears are emerging from hibernation

‘Superman’ breaks MMA record
Anthony “Five” Manacio V, 23, a first-time fighter with a six-year wrestling career, stunned the crowd with his Rough House Boxing record breaking win over fellow first-time fighter Andrew “Anderson” Johnson, 21, just 11 seconds into the bout. With Superman tattoos on his arms, Manacio beat the previous MMA record of 17 seconds by using what he called his “Superman” punch.

JDHS kicks past wet, muddy KayHi
The Juneau-Douglas High School girls varsity soccer team opened their season by sweeping past Southeast Conference rival Ketchikan on the road this weekend, adding Saturday’s 8-1 victory to Friday’s 9-0 shutout.
