Constitution? What the heck IS that?

Every day brings a new low, but this gaffe made my “Embarrassed to be an Alaskan” meter jump a bit more than others.

First Sarah Palin couldn’t keep straight what a Vice President’s role in the senate is, now she appears to have no idea what the First Amendment actually entails.

During an interview on WMAL-FM, the following statement left Palin’s mouth in response to a question asking whether she thought the Republicans were getting treated fairly by the media

I don’t think they’re doing their job when they suggest that calling a candidate out on their record, their plans for this country, and their associations is mean-spirited or negative campaigning. If they convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations, then I don’t know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media.

Did you get that?

She believes that the news media criticizing her for what she says is a threat to her First Amendment rights.

Really?

Yes.

Really?

Yes.

I could almost forgive her for the VP thing. Maybe the wording isn’t explicit enough and okay, it’s hidden in the article describing legislative duties instead of the article describing executive duties. But the First Amendment? Come ON! It’s one sentence and it’s easy to find because it’s the FIRST AMENDMENT. It reads:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Palin is seemingly under the impression that this can be construed to mean that it protects her from that mean ol’ ‘gotcha’ media when, in fact, it’s the very amendment that allows the media to question her.

Bless her heart.

Also too, please don’t let her become Vice President…

My question is: Is Palin the only one that doesn’t get the first amendment? Why was Imus fired again? And others have been “booed” and “hissed” and forced to “APOLOGIZE”! I do understand the derogatory meaning..of that word…but it’s still “speech”, correct? Isn’t being called a “honky” or “gringo” or “white boy” or anything else derogatory but have the ones who have said those words ever been fired or have they been called racist, or forced to apologize? I know that this is a little “off” from your original story, but I felt that we can’t fault Palin for the same thing that happens everyday..and I believe will happen even more if Obama becomes pres! (Even though he is HALF white)!
