Sarah Palin vs The World
Or versus countries other than the United States, at least.
Curious as to what other countries might be reporting on Sarah Palin, I embarked on a Google News advanced search, which allows you to search the news and limit the results to specific countries.
I only searched news in a few English-speaking countries and sorted “by relevance,” but you can also narrow down by state or any country of your choosing. Here are links to the search results for each country and a summary of the results:
- Canada – Canada’s top result was Madonna’s announcement that Sarah Palin is not welcome at any of her concerts. Poor Sarah, she’d make such a good groupie. In other news, there’s a story about Palin’s Canadian roots, “As if Pamela Anderson weren’t embarrassing enough,” a funny little op-ed piece titled Sarah Palin’s candidacy is insultin,’ dontcha know?, and a sad story about a journalist who wrote about Palin’s unfitness to be VP.
- United Kingdom – Under the same sort of weather we get here in Juneau, maybe the UK would be a little more sympathetic… Nope! The most relevant article in the UK is a column on Times Online, Sarah Palin: Every Comedian’s Dream. Another column on the same site, Shallow, fake… Sarah Palin is beyond parody, says the “kid-glove treatment of the Republican vice-presidential candidate is an insult to women.” Then you have the satirical Sarah Palin’s Dream – To Move The Washington Redskins to Alaska. At least they think she’s good for a laugh or two!
- South Africa – What does Africa think of this whole Palin thing? About the same as Canada and the UK, it seems. Their top result is a column that draws on Kill Bill Vol. 2 for an interesting parallel between McPalin and Superman. Then you’ve got a blog that references another blog that suggests Palin sent Track off to Iraq so he’d avoid jailtime for dealing drugs. Then, sitting there like a little diamond sparkling amidst all the coal, you’ve got a sports-related blog entry reviewing a cricket game between India and Australia. Sarah Palin has finally become a laughing stock abroad – just look at this line, “Hayden tried to talk up his team, but ended up sounding like Sarah Palin explaining the economy.” Ha! Palin’s a punchline in South African cricket talk!
Other interesting results might come from India, Japan, or even Israel.
Go take a look at what other countries think of Palin, it’s fun. You can expand that to other topics too – after all, we all live in the same world, it’s good to know your neighbors.
